SugamyaWeb: Empowering Digital Accessibility Across India
Despite the critical need, traditional accessibility solutions remain predominantly manual, time-intensive, and costly, leading to limited adoption, especially by large organizations. These barriers disproportionately affect people with disabilities, restricting their access to essential digital services like healthcare, public welfare, and legal information.
Introducing SugamyaWeb: A Game-Changer in Digital Accessibility
In this challenging landscape, SugamyaWeb emerges as a groundbreaking solution. Developed through an innovation challenge which was won by Indian startup Sumatak Technologies LLP through its founder Ananda Kanagaraj Sankar and co-founder Sujatha, SugamyaWeb is a cloud-enabled, fully automated accessibility platform that revolutionizes the way government entities approach web accessibility. By providing an end-to-end solution for testing, monitoring, and enhancing accessibility, SugamyaWeb ensures cost-efficiency, scalability, and seamless integration with complex systems.
Since its deployment in December 2022, SugamyaWeb has empowered over 200 government departments to improve the accessibility of more than 400 websites by resolving more than 1 lakh issues, directly benefiting millions of citizens across India. Its innovative features have set a new benchmark in accessibility technology, inspiring widespread adoption of inclusive practices.
The Innovation Behind SugamyaWeb
Problem Identification and Ideation
During the ideation phase of the innovation challenge Sumatak team led by Ananda identified critical gaps in existing accessibility solutions—manual processes, high costs, and an overemphasis on compliance rather than usability. SugamyaWeb was conceptualized to address these challenges with automation, impact-based reporting, and user-centred design.
Development and Testing
In the second phase of the NIC and MeitY Innovation Challenge, Sumatak team led by Ananda developed of a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) featuring:
- Automated checks aligned with GIGW 3.0 and WCAG 2.1 guidelines guidelines.
- Role-based dashboards.
- Impact-prioritized reporting to address critical accessibility barriers efficiently.
Feedback from government accessibility experts refined these features, ensuring their relevance and effectiveness.
Scalable Architecture
The platform’s microservices-based architecture allows for seamless scaling and adaptation to new accessibility requirements. Its modular design supports the integration of custom test rules, ensuring long-term usability.
NIC Deployment
Following its selection as the Innovation Challenge Winner, SugamyaWeb was customized for government use. The platform integrates seamlessly with government systems like Parichay and the NIC Cloud, simplifying accessibility efforts across departments.
